We’ve all had difficult walks in our lives – after a fight with a close friend, alone in the rain after a breakup, or leaving home for the first time.
But as an immigrant, I’ve witnessed one of the most undervalued and least talked about tough walks: leaving your elderly parents at the airport security gate.
All you can do is stand there, watching them walk away, fighting back tears that threaten to fall.
I know what you’re thinking – “Then why did you leave your home country?”
It’s a fair question, but most people don’t realize there are two types of immigrants:
🔹 Opportunity Immigrants – Those who choose to leave for better prospects 🔹 Situational Immigrants – Those who are forced to leave due to circumstances
I belong to the second category. Leaving my country was never part of my plan. I was cornered by life circumstances with no clear path forward at home.
I’m not alone – millions of immigrants worldwide are situational migrants, each with their own story of being pushed rather than pulled to foreign shores.
The internal battle is real:
- Your mind knows this is for the best
- Your heart refuses to accept it
- You carry the weight of expectations
- You know this “golden ticket” can’t be wasted
After enduring this emotional turmoil, if you don’t make the most of your opportunity abroad, you become the author of your own ordinary story.
Sometimes the heart wins over the mind. That solitary walk from the airport terminal is one of those moments – perhaps the toughest walk of all.
To my fellow immigrants: Your struggle is seen, your sacrifice is recognized, and your strength is admirable. 🙏
